Office Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

It’s far from the first such device, but we suspect Joy Corp’s new MD-3000 unit will also be far from the last GPS / black box combo device we see, especially if incidents like these keep up at the pace they have been. As with similar devices, this one keeps the video rolling at all times, in this case recording 12 seconds before a crash and six seconds after, as well as other information from your vehicle if all those wires are any indications. What’s more the device also promises to warn you in advance if it thinks your headed for disaster, and if you feel like taking a rest (or a risk while driving) you can take advantage of its PMP and DMB TV functionality. As you might have guessed, this one is strictly Korea-only, where it’ll set you back the local equivalent of $1,100.

As if we weren’t already overwhelmed with Sling news lately — what with the EchoStar acquisition, Slingbox SOLO launch, and SlingPlayer Mobile for Symbian moving out of beta — we’ve just gotten word that the company is working with RIM to develop a BlackBerry-compatible version of its client. Pocket-lint reportedly got the scoop straight from the horse’s mouth, with European VP Stuart Collingswood confirming the joint effort but giving no indication of a release timetable. Besides S60, Sling also currently supports Palm and both the Smartphone and Pocket PC versions of Windows Mobile in the handset space.

Just in case Linksys and D-Link’s introductions weren’t enough to satisfy, Microsoft is now announcing yet another partner in its refreshed Extenders for Windows Media Center effort. Beginning in “early 2008,” owners of HP’s current 42- and 47-inch MediaSmart LCD HDTVs will be able to utilize all of the features of the Media Center Extender platform sans any additional hardware. According to Microsoft, users will simply download a software update for their set, after which they’ll be able to kick back and enjoy a little Windows Media Center Internet TV while basking in the glory that is added functionality.

While there’s no indication that they got the game to test it with, the folks at the FCC did at least get to spend a bit of time with the new wireless guitar for the PS3 version of Rock Band, which is more than enough to make us a tad envious. Somewhat interestingly, the guitar looks to come bundled with a fairly unassuming-looking dongle (check it out after the break), which would seem to be unnecessary if the guitar used Bluetooth, as some had previously speculated. Otherwise, the FCC filing looks to be about as standard as they come, complete with a snippet of the manual, a slew of test reports, and a few shots of the guitar’s innards thrown in for good measure (click on through for a glimpse of that).

Samsung seems to be working a little in reverse with its upcoming SGH-i780 Windows Mobile 6 handset, showing it first at GITEX, then providing shots to media a couple weeks later — all without an official press release or announcement. Fortunately, we have pretty much all the information we want about it at this point, save for one key detail: will it come to AT&T as the rumored BlackJack 2? Unlike the original BlackJack, the i780 runs the touchscreen-driven Professional variant of Windows Mobile, features an “optical mouse” on the d-pad that provides the user with an actual on-screen pointer, and features integrated WiFi and GPS. If we were the wagering sort, we’d guess that an AT&T variant of this sucker would lose the WiFi and trade Euro HSDPA radio hardware for its North American equivalent, but with integrated GPS, it still seems like it could be a worthwhile upgrade. Sweden apparently expects it in early 2008, though there’s no official word on launches elsewhere just yet.

CBS is launching a new project called EyeLab that will produce short clips relating to some of the popular shows on the network. For example, viewers might expect to see behind the scenes footage from shows like CSI or Survivor, or a montage of recent plot developments. Videos will be streamed over the CBS web site, where they currently also make available past episodes of many of their shows.

According to the President of CBS Interactive, the network’s research indicates that less than a third of their viewers are interested in viewing full-length shows online, which is why they decided to offer short-form video as well. It’s a different approach than rival NBC, which plans to make available full-length downloads of their shows.

Details (other than super-nerdy RF interference specs) are light right now, but an HTC device labeled the “Phoebus” just hit the FCC’s website, and a look through the specs reveals what appears to be a GSM 850 / 1900 device, with a 2 megapixel camera. Unfortunately, there’s isn’t a shot of the front of the device, so you’ll have to make do with this sexy shot of a flayed backside while we dig up the real.

Update: Goodness, the back end of this thing certainly bears a striking resemblance to that of the Dopod C750, doesn’t it? Looks like this could be the upcoming Juno for T-Mobile.

DST-HDIn the alphabet soup that is the format war, the latest codec to finally come to fruition is DTS-HD MA. Up ’till now a few Blu-ray titles have included DTS-HD MA tracks, but no one’s been able to enjoy them until now. Samsung has released a firmware update for the BD-P1400 — yes already — that enables this lossless codec to be sent via HDMI 1.3a to an audio/video receiver to be decoded. As exciting is this may be to some, we suspect that this feature will go unnoticed to most people, as the number of receivers out there right now sportin’ this feature is really limited.
